Survey Monkey – an anonymised online voting platform.

  • How?

Registered representatives will be sent a link to vote.

  • Who?

Each Global Young Green Member Organisation has 1 vote.

  • What voting system?

Single Transferable Vote (voters are asked to rank candidates in order of preference     and candidates are elected upon filling a quota of votes).

Who votes?

As stated in the GYG Organisational Principles, each Member Organisation of Global Young Greens has 1 vote.

  • Please See Annex A for a full list of Member Organisations and votes.
  • Please also refer to page 4 of the GYG Organisational Principles for more information on “Members”.

Each Member Organisation is responsible for registering one person to vote on behalf of their organisation, this could be the Chair, International Secretary or Spokesperson, for example.

How can I register to vote?

To register one voter for your organisation please fill out the following registration survey until 23rd of April 2020, 23:59 CET:

Voter registration form region Africa: https://www.surveymonkey.de/r/9RBY335

Voter registration form region Americas: https://www.surveymonkey.de/r/9S56MG5

Voter registration form region Asia-Pacific: https://www.surveymonkey.de/r/9TK9D9R

Voter registration form region Europe: https://www.surveymonkey.de/r/MKKDN5S

How do I vote?

1. Receive a link

The registered person to vote for your member organisation will receive a link to the email they provided at time of registration. The link will lead to an anonymised online election platform. It will only be possible to use this link once.

2. Cast the vote

There will be a period of one week to cast your vote. Registered voters will be asked to rank the candidates in order of preference.

For example:

  1. Candidate C (highest/first preference)
  2. Candidate A (second preference)
  3. Candidate B (third preference)
  4. Candidate D (fourth/last preference)
  5. Re-open Elections (Fifth preference)

Gender quota

Please bear in mind that GYG  Organisational Principles state thatat least one person [elected] from each region needs to define themselves as a woman, inter or trans person, thus representatives from each region must be gender balanced. In order to fulfill this quota, vote calculations will ensure that the first calculation contains only women, inter or trans candidates, and then the second calculation contains all remaining candidates.

Re-open Elections

When casting the vote, you will also get the option “reopen elections”. This option advocates the re-opening of the election process. Organisations might put this as their first or second preference if they are not happy with the candidate selection available and would prefer to re-open elections for a different candidate selection.

In the case of “reopen elections” being the first preference of a majority, the region’s election is reopened. If “reopen elections” receives the majority of first and second preferences and the candidate with most first preferences is a woman inter or trans person, this person is elected and elections are only reopened regarding the second position.

After vote submission: If you’re not sure whether or not you cast your vote effectively yet, you can click the voting link for a second time. You will only be able to give a preference if you haven’t yet cast a vote. Furthermore, you should receive a confirmation email after successful voting.

  1. Counting the vote

Global Young Greens uses a round based single transferable vote (STV) system to elect the two Steering Committee members of each region. The votes are anonymous to the Oversight Committee within SurveyMonkey. It is impossible to vote more than once via one link.

What is the STV system?

The STV system is a proportional representation method of election in which voters rank candidates in order of preference. As candidates pass a specified electoral quota, they are elected and their surplus votes are redistributed to the remaining candidates until all positions are filled. Results therefore fairly reflect accurately the preferences of the electors.

When will we know the results?

The election results will be announced on 05.05.2020.
