Voices from the Roots: the TNW

The Team for Nature and Wildlife (TNW) is a social, non profit, non governmental organization founded by Mr. Babu Kaji Shrestha aka B K Dalit with the involvement of environment and society conscious Nepalese youths ultimately for the green and sustainable community. The practical sustainable development of the nation with the empowerment and involvement of youth and community stakeholders is the main goal of the organization. The organization is founded, governed, managed and run by the youth.

The Team for Nature and Wildlife (TNW) has now been recognized as the leading youth led environmental organization of Nepal working for a sustainable community by educating, inspiring and empowering the community especially the youth. Since its inception in 2007, TNW has been working to generate awareness on a wide range of critical environmental issues amongst children and urban and rural community people through highly creative, interactive and “infotainment”-based media such as green theatre shows, talk shows, eco-competitions, green discussion, and a youth environmental summit. TNW has also been working in a community empowerment, eco-friendly school building and in green village development programs.

TNW has worked in partnership with many institutions, including the Nepalese Ministry of Environment, the Ministry of Agriculture, and the Ministry of Forests; the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Nepal, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the National Trust for Nature Conservation, Environmental Camps for Conservation Awareness (ECCA), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the VSBK (Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation), the United States Embassy, the Society for Conservation Biology Social Science Working Group (USA), the University of Sussex (UK), Radio Nepal, Arohan Theatre (Gurukul), and The Himalayan Theatre. In the year 2010, TNW has launched a “Youth Empowerment for Green Job” Project which aims to reduce the rate of youth unemployment and environmental degradation in the country. To launch this project, UN-HABITAT and the Ministry of Youth have extended grant assistance. TNW has a goal of empowering 500 young people in the year 2010 for green youth entrepreneurship.

TNW has taken initiative to form the Global Alliance for Rhino Conservation (GARC) under the chairmanship of B K Dalit with the involvement of world renowned prominent animal rights activist from across the globe. The alliance was formed during the Asia for Animals Conference in January 2010, in Singapore. Likewise, TNW has launched the Kathmandu Cycle City 2020 campaign to make Kathmandu the most cycle friendly city in by the year 2020. To help this campaign achieve its goal, TNW has formed Global Alliance for Cycle Cities (cyclecities.co.uk) during the UN World Urban Forum held in Brazil in March 2010 with its operating office in the UK. TNW is also a sister organization of the Nature Conservation Party, an emerging green party of Nepal founded by B K Dalit. The party is an Associate Member of the Global Greens and Asia Pacific Green Networks (APGN).
