International Day of the Girl Child

The International Day of the Girl Child is an annual day on 11 October to bring the unique challenges that girls face in their everyday lives into focus. This year was the first International Day of the Girl Child declared by the United Nations. It is a day to celebrate and acknowledge the status of girls by the UN putting its weight and influence behind global efforts to raise awareness for girls’ rights and shine a light on areas where those rights are routinely violated.

This “Doll Protest” was realized by ActionAid in Pakistan. It displays toy figures holding miniature placards against early girl child marriages. It is an innovate approach to express concern over the issue of child marriages in Pakistan, as the dolls and other toys play the role of demonstrators. The stuffed animals illustrate a protest, holding signs against girl child marriages.
